Itinerary for Following the Songlines

I.    Sydney, Australia.

a.    Two-week internship at Cydonia Glassworks.

  • Under the direction of Sergio Redegalli, Cydonia Glassworks has become one of the foremost studios using glass as an architectural building material.
  • This internship will be invaluable to my development.  I long to produce large-scale glass installations and to use glass as an architectural element.  The expertise of this company will expand my vocabulary and help me to understand the possibilities and limitations of glass for this purpose.
  • I will study their business plan looking for ways to grow my own studio practices into a sustainable business.

b.    Visit Sydney College of Arts.

  • Opportunity to observe another glass program and learn how their studio functions.  Specifically interested in bringing “green” technologies for the glass studio back to the United States.

c.    Visit Glass Artists Gallery.

  • Gain understanding of an international glass market first hand.
  • Opportunity to meet Maureen Cahill.  First generation Australian glass artist.  Equivalent to meeting Dick Marquis at the beginning of the American studio glass movement.
  • Deliver my portfolio in person.

II.     Canberra, Australia.

a.    One-week residency at Australian National Glass Center.

  • This institution has developed several United Nations and Australian national grants to build their studio from the ground up.
  • With this funding they have developed a sustainable business responsible for supporting several of the most important international players in contemporary glass.

III.   Melbourne, Australia.

a.    Visit Monash University.

  • Offer my view of glass as a building material, also offer technical advice, specifically; unconventional mold making systems and lost-wax casting techniques.

IV.   Adelaide, Australia.

a.    One week residency at the Jam Factory.

  • The Jam Factory is an incubator for emerging artists that has risen from a disused industrial area of the city.  This internship will help me understand how artists and art studios can be a factor in the revitalization of a community.

V.    Uluru (Ayer's Rock).

a.    A 5 Day, 4 Night Camping Safari.

  • Visiting Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Watarrka (Kings Canyon), Palm Valley and the West MacDonnell Ranges.

 

VI.    Auckland, New Zealand.

a.    Visit Gaffer Glass.

  • Gaffer glass is a producer of high quality blowing and casting glasses.  This visit will provide a chance to expand my technical understanding of glass chemistry and color production.

b.    Work for Luke Jacomb.

  •  Opportunity to work for CIA artist in residence (2006)
